Thanks for your interest in Richardson Humane Society (RHS).
RHS is a non-profit, all volunteer organization based in Richardson, TX. We
rescue animals (primarily dogs) and find them new homes with loving families in
the area. All our animals are fostered in the homes of our volunteers.
This page describes the volunteers opportunities available at RHS and then provides instructions on submitting a volunteer application.
The minimum age for volunteers is 15 years old. We regret that we cannot accept volunteers younger than this. If you are younger than 15, you may want to consider volunteering at the Richardson Animal Shelter.
We need volunteers in many different areas. This page briefly describes the different volunteer opportunities.
Foster Homes look after our pets while they are awaiting adoption. After a
new pet arrives with RHS, it spends a couple of days at the vet's office to get
a clean bill of health and is then moved to a foster home. The foster home is
responsible for looking after the pet until it is adopted.
Our intake coordinator will always try and select pets that are good matches for
our foster homes and will take into account the likes, dislikes and requirements
of the home when selecting new animals.
Everything you need to look after the pet is provided. This includes food,
medications, treats, bowls, crate, toys, litter box, etc.
Normally, the foster home will drop the pet off at our adopt-a-pet event at
11:45 a.m. every Saturday and pick them up at 4 p.m. Assistance with transporting
pets
to and from our adopt-a-pet events can be arranged if needed.
Our number one need is for foster homes.
The more foster homes we have, the more lives we can save.
Every Saturday, we hold an adoption event at a local area pet store. We need volunteers to help out at these events. New volunteers will start by working one of the two animal welfare positions. Animal welfare volunteers are responsible for the health and comfort of the animals at the adoption event. Greeters welcome people to the events and counselors interview potential adopters and review applications. Orientation is required before working at an adoption event.
Although, the foster homes usually transport animals to and from vet visits and adoption events, this is not always possible. We need volunteers who can assist with transport when a foster is unable to do so.
Before an animal is adopted, we require a visit to the potential adopter's home. This allows us to ensure the pet will be entering a loving and safe environment and also to educate the adopter (particularly new dog owners) on what to expect and crucial issues such as heartworm prevention. We need volunteers to assist with these visits.
If you would like to get involved with RHS, or learn more about what we do, please fill in our volunteer application form. This brief form will take your name and contact information and areas of interest, and let you read and acknowledge our code of ethics. A member of our volunteer committee will contact you, usually within a day or two, to talk with you further about the roles you are interested in and to get you started with RHS.
