Filomena

Filomena

I know, I know, ALL adoptions are special, they are. But this one…it’s EXTRA special, so kick back and let me tell you a story…In February of 2021, Cindy Chadwick pulled three dogs from a hoarding situation – they were in various stages of neglect. Filomena – the “worst of the three” was severely under-socialized, unable to be touched or approached, and completely shut down. This is the one Andie Butler offered to foster (are we surprised?). In reviewing Cindy’s notes, she says “Doesn’t like to be looked at or touched. Andie has her work cut out for her but I can’t think of a better place for this little girl.”Cindy was right, there wasn’t a better place for her and won’t be – Andie adopted her yesterday. In the year and a half that Andie has had Filomena she has gone from a dog you can’t look at or touch, a dog that lives in a corner (literally) with her face and body smashed against a wall, to a dog that engages with the world, comes out of her corner, goes for walks, plays with the other dogs, and follows Andie around. As always, it takes a village to rehabilitate some of these dogs – in the case of Andie and Filomena, it took the monumental patience of Andie along with help from Nicole Kohanski, our resident dog behaviorist, and Dr. Tucker, a veterinarian who specializes in behavior at Summer Creek Animal Clinic, to help bring Meena out of her corner and into the light. This has been a long journey with a very happy ending. We are quite literally indebted to Richardson Humane Society, a rescue group that goes above and beyond for their dogs. Meena’s rehabilitation came with a steep price tag, to defray some of her medical costs please consider donating today. Welcome home, Meena, and THANK YOU Andie Butler. You are a hero among heroes.
