Today we said goodbye to Tillman. We put him to sleep in the back yard, on his blanket in the sun. Tillman loved to be outside: running on empty beaches in the fall, with our friends dogs through the fields and pastures at their ranch on the Red River – he never bothered the horses and had the sense to give the cattle a wide birth – around the neighborhood with our daughter or just hanging out in the yard “supervising” as we did yard work. But he would never just hang out in the back yard by himself. I don’t think he ever forgot being abandoned in a back yard. You see Tillman was smart. He was just as smart as the border collies we had before him but laid back. He was the easiest dog I have ever trained; quick to learn, eager to please. He was willfully obedient. Tillman was loved by the entire neighborhood and was known as “the best dog in the neighborhood.” We are incredibly grateful to have had him as a part of our lives and want to thank you for rescuing him and caring for him until we came along.
